After getting expelled from yet another school for yet another clash with mythological monsters only he can see, twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is taken to Camp Half-Blood, where he finally learns the truth about his unique abilities: He is a demigod, half human, half immortal. Even more stunning: His father is the Greek god Poseidon, ruler of the sea, making Percy one of the most powerful demigods alive. There's little time to process this news. All too soon, a cryptic prophecy from the Oracle sends Percy on his first quest, a mission to the Underworld to prevent a war among the gods of Olympus. This first installment of Rick Riordan's best-selling series is a non-stop thrill-ride and a classic of mythic proportions.
The story revolves around a young dyslexic boy, Percy Jackson who finds out that he's actually a half-blood from his murderous maths teacher on a school trip to a museum. Apparently those close to him knew/suspected what he actually is the whole time. Surely his life can't get any more complicated than that?
Indeed it can, Percy gets sent to Camp Half-Blood. He eventually gains friends {a satyr and a daughter of Athena} and is sent on a quest. Oh, and did I mention that his father who he has never set eyes on is Poseidon, god of the sea? That's right, in this series Greek gods are moving, kicking and doing godly things.
One thing I really liked was that Riordan replaced those boring "Chapter 1" to "I accidentally vaporize my pre-algebra teacher". Do you really need another reason to start reading this book? Also, Camp Half-Blood's architecture is splendidly described in detail.
The world Riordan created is just amazing and believable. For example Mount Olympus is located on floor 1000 of the Empire State Building. Dionysus, the god of wine is camp director and other things like that. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the most fun Greek gods story there is.
